Soha Ali Khan News: Making a strong comeback to the silver screen with Chhori 2, actress Soha Ali Khan has left audiences stunned with her powerful performance. For the first time in her career, she stepped into the shoes of a negative (grey-shaded) character and recently opened up about this shift, as well as her thoughts on the rise of women-centric films in the industry. After a long hiatus, Soha Ali Khan returns to the big screen with Chhori 2, and this time, she surprises fans with a never-seen-before avatar. Known for her elegance and grace, Soha has taken on a dark and intense role as “Daasi Maa,” a character that’s eerie yet captivating.

In a candid conversation, Soha reflected on why she took up the negative role and how she felt about the evolving space for female-led stories in Hindi cinema.

Soha confessed that she was initially hesitant about doing the film. "I had fears about whether it would turn out to be a good horror film. But I controlled my hesitation, and within a day, I said yes. I knew this was a golden opportunity to prove myself as an actor," she said.

She added, "As actors, we all want our performances to be recognized and appreciated. Playing a negative role was something new and exciting for me. I didn’t want to miss this chance." Laughing, Soha said, "Honestly, I’ve been 'negative' many times in real life too — people just didn’t notice. But now, they’ll see what happens when I don’t get food on time!" She quipped that despite her potential, no one had previously considered her for such roles. "I’d just say the opportunity came late, but it came right."

She also highlighted the creative freedom that comes with such characters
"Negative roles give you room to experiment, unlike the usual hero or heroine parts, which often come with boundaries."

Her First Reaction to Being Offered the Role

Soha recalled being surprised when director Vishal Furia approached her for Chhori 2. "I asked him, ‘Why me?’ It’s a different kind of role — something I’ve never done before. He explained how horror characters, especially witches or ghosts, have always been stereotypical. He wanted to portray horror in a more layered, intriguing way — not necessarily beautiful, but something that attracts and terrifies at the same time."

She found the concept fascinating

"The way the character of Daasi Maa was envisioned really intrigued me. I knew the visuals — the poster, the trailer — would make an impact. As an actor, it’s a challenge, but also a joy. And yes, I enjoy scaring people — even at home, sometimes!"

On Women-Centric Films in a Male-Dominated Industry

Speaking on the emergence of women-led narratives in Hindi cinema, Soha shared, "There’s definitely been a shift. Ten years ago, I couldn’t have imagined playing such a strong role at the age of 40. But now, actresses over 40 are thriving, and that means a lot to me."

Despite the progress, she believes equality is still a work in progress. "We still label films as 'women-centric' because we haven’t reached full parity yet. There’s still a long way to go — especially behind the camera. Many stories about women are still told through a male lens. We’re on the right path, but the journey isn't over yet."
